Gothic

Although the imagery associated with the term ‘Gothic’ comes from 19th century literature, the Gothic Sub-culture as we know it today, was started in the U.K. as part of the music scene in the early 1980s’s; the gothic rock scene emerged as an offshoot of the post-punk genre. Showing incredible durability, the Goth scene continues to thrive today, long after other ‘trends’ of the same era have been forgotten. Much of the reason for this success has to be down to the incredible creativity of the fashion which is as unique, individual and varied as each wearer.

There are actually many styles that are called Gothic, including punk, death rock, androgynous and even influences from Renaissance and Victorian styling; or combinations of all these looks to create an even more individual effect. Alongside the fashion is Gothic style jewellery, make-up and hair. The Gothic style is typified by dark eyeliner, pale skin, dark fingernails, black clothes, dark, spiked hair, body piercings and chains worn as jewellery. But of course, as with all styles, each is unique to the individual.
